Morton's Neuroma
Nerve pain is different from muscle and bone pain in that the pain quality is more of a burning, tingling type. What I tell patients is that nerve or neuroma pain is very much like the tingling you feel after you hit your funny bone.
Most people are familiar with that!
Neuroma pain most commonly occurs in the area of your 3rd and 4th toes. What patients often describe is that they “have to take their shoes off, and massage the toes. This helps to make the pain go away.”
The nerve gets trapped between the toe bones. This is what irritates the nerve, and causes the pain previously described. All nerve pain syndromes, like carpal tunnel syndrome and sciatica, have this similar etiology. A nerve gets pinched or crushed, and it reacts with that burning and tingling sensation.
Conservative therapy can usually take care of the problem without having to remove the nerve.
