Diabetic Foot
The diabetic foot is a complicated and often poorly treated area of foot and ankle care. The foot and ankle institute podiatrist specialize in the care of diabetic feet from prevention to limb salvage.
Foot Ulcers
Diabetic foot ulcerations are common as the severity of diabetes increases. Although circulation problems may be part of the problem, circulation is not the main cause of amputation or ulcer healing. Most commonly, due to loss of sensation in the foot from peripheral neuropathy, the ulceration is not painful and therefore patients often
will not come to see us until the ulcer has gotten infected and severe problems have developed.
With infection, there is a need for extra blood supply that the diabetic foot cannot always provide. It is essential to treat the ulcer prior to infection in order to not require this additional blood supply need.
Diabetic Ulcer Treatment
Through a combination of early detection and a complete knowledge of foot and ankle function, we are able to control the causes of diabetic foot and ankle problems prior to their start. For instance, did you know that a diabetic could monitor his steps every day, and thus potentially prevent breakdown?
Medicare provides one pair of shoes and 3 pairs of insoles per year for diabetic patients. Dr. Schafer is contracted with DME and is able to provide this service for his patients.
